Four Italian Stallions

Scarbolo, Pinot Grigio, ‘Ramato’, Friuli, Italy 2006                                             $26.0

This is one of the most unique Pinot Grigio’s you will ever imbibe. Ramato, which is Italian for copper, refers to the color you see in the glass. Scarbolo ferments the juice and Pinot Grigio skins together which imbues a deeper color and exotic nuance to the wine. This is a serious rosé which shows nicely with a wide range of salty or savory foods…... Think a plate of chacouterie or marinated olives.

 

Travignoli, Sangiovese, Chianti Rufina, Tuscany 2006                                      $16.5

Rufina is located in the northeastern sector of the Chianti denomination and produces fragrant, spicy reds. With winter having officially made its stamp, a glass of Chianti to accompany your mid-week meal will surely be a giver of abundant warmth. Consider the Travignoli your new go-to burger, pizza, pasta wine.

 

Vestini Campagnano, ‘Kajanero’, Campania, Italy 2005                                    $17.5

Made with a unique blend of four indigenous varieties:  Pallagrello Nero, Casavecchia, Pizzutella, and Aglianico. Yes, that’s a mouth full—and so is the wine!! The grapes grow on a bed of ancient volcanic soil, giving the wine an expressive nuance very uncommon to a wine of such value. The palate provides a harmonious balance of warm fruit, and savory minerality.

 

Poggio alle Querce, Cabernet/Merlot, Bolgheri, Tuscany 2006                      $24.0

Most Super Tuscans aren’t very budget friendly. In fact, many are obnoxiously overpriced.  But we have found the needle in the hay stack with the delicious, mouth filling Poggio alle Querce blend. The vineyards are located in Bolgheri, near the Tuscan coast which provides ideal growing conditions. The weight of this wine warrants a dish equally as powerfully. Think red meat.
